Launch of EU Organic Day

Making organic farming mainstream

The European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission are signing today a Joint Declaration to celebrate the European Organic Day every 23rd of September.

The Biodynamic Federation Demeter International very much welcomes the institutionalisation of a EU Organic Day as part of the EU Organic Action Plan. It acknowledges the crucial role organic farming is playing in providing healthy food while preserving our environment. This dedicated day ensures visibility and recognition for organic farming and will hopefully be an incentive to further foster its increase in the coming years.

Reward organic farming

The EU Organic Day is also the perfect opportunity to take a look at the 25% objective of organic land by 2030 announced in the Farm to Fork Strategy and to see which steps still need to be undertaken. Especially at a moment where the EU member states are implementing their CAP national strategic plans, it is important to encourage and reward organic farmers to increase the proportion of organic farmed land until 2030.

“We are very happy to celebrate the EU Organic Day and see it as a momentum to reach the 25% target of organic land by 2030. The EU Organic Day must be an incentive to support the development of organic farming worldwide as part of the solution for a sustainable future” stresses Clara Behr, Head of Policy and Public Relations at the Federation. “We look forward to establish this important day with success every year and collaborate all together to make organic farming mainstream in the future”.
