Feeling the Joy of Biodynamic Farming

Our ‘Feel the Joy’ Communication Campaign highlights the essence of biodynamic farming, as a holistic, ethical, and ecological approach to farming caring for the people and the planet. Today, biodynamic farming is practiced in over 65 countries, with more than 7,000 farmers stewarding 255,000 hectares of land. Let’s have a look at what it means to practice biodynamic farming!
Demeter Standard
The Demeter trademark is the only global brand that certifies biodynamic products. Based on the organic standard, it stands for the highest standard in organic agriculture with most products certified to both organic and Demeter standards. But Demeter certification is more than just a label — it reflects a commitment to biodynamic principles and to long-term sustainability. From farm to shelf, every step of production, processing, and distribution is carefully inspected according to the International Demeter Biodynamic Standard and upheld by a global network of certifying organisations.
“The Demeter standard encompasses production, processing and distribution. That means that all the way through the supply chain, care is there for the environment, for the impact on the environment, and for the quality of the food.”
– Alysoun Bolger, Coordinator of the Standards Committee and Accreditation Council of the Biodynamic Federation Demeter International
Based on Demeter’s core principles, the International Demeter Biodynamic Standard defines the minimum requirements for Demeter certification, which are democratically defined and agreed upon by the member organisations of the Federation and upheld by the global biodynamic community.
In this way, the Demeter brand is not owned by a corporation, but by the international biodynamic community. This collective responsibility ensures that the Demeter standard is always evolving to meet the highest integrity and standard for biodynamic farming around the world. The Demeter standard covers every step of the process — from production to processing and distribution — ensuring environmental responsibility and exceptional quality throughout the entire supply chain. It sets out the baseline for all Demeter certified farmers and producers, even though many of them choose to even exceed these expectations.

Demeter Certification
Demeter certification starts with a meaningful commitment to biodynamic principles. Farmers and processors are then supported every step of the way by trainers, advisors, and experienced members of the biodynamic community. Certification is not just an endpoint — it’s a collaborative and ongoing process of learning, growth, and regeneration.
” I feel more responsible than doing the basics. It is also the possibility for me to go further, to do things better. The most important thing is that I feel responsible for the whole farm organism and for the consumers.”
– Herman Lutke Schipholt, Biodynamic Farmer & Advisor, Switzerland
In addition to meeting organic requirements, compliance with the Demeter standard is verified through regular inspections which are the core of the certification process. All requirements are verified by the international certification team and other Demeter certification organisations through a professional and reliable certification scheme to protect the integrity of the trademark.
As biodynamic farming views each farm as a unique, living organism, where all parts – soil, animals, plants, and people — work together to create a thriving ecosystem, each of these elements is crucial to the farm’s overall health and must be managed together to ensure the well-being of the entire farm organism. For this reason, it’s not possible to convert only a part of a farm to the Demeter standard, but rather, the entire farm must be certified. Each of the farm elements must go hand in hand to contribute to the farm’s overall health.
